How to choose a double futon, what to look out for and where to buy them

A futon is a type of traditional Japanese bed. It is basically a flat mattress stuffed with various types of material such as wool or cotton. It comes as single, semi-double or double futon. Traditionally a futon consists of only the bottom mattress and a quilted bedcover. However, modern futons sold in western countries often consist of a base, mostly in the form of a wooden or metal frame. Some futons can rolled up to resemble another piece of furniture.

Whether it is a double futon, or a single one, has many advantage over a conventional bed. Lets go over a few of them here.

One of the greatest benefits of having a double futon is the fact that it takes up very little space. Maybe you live in an apartment with very small rooms and you want to maximise the amount of useable space. In this case a futon can help in that it can be folded away each morning. Also, perhaps you frequently have guests staying over but do not have the permanent space required to have an extra bed.

Another great thing about the futon is that if you have narrow hallways or if you live upstairs, where it is difficult to shift furnitures, then you are saved from the headache or having to lift a bed around tight corners because the futon can be folded away and moved with ease. The base can be taken apart into pieces and assembled once at destination. This aspect of the futon comes in very handy.

There are many places where you can get a double futon. Most cities have specialist stores nowadays that stock a range of them in very affordable prices. The key thing is that the mattress should be comfortable and that you should feel that it is offering adequate support over a long period. This would mean that you will have to try it out. Most stores would let you take it home and try it for a week or so. Your spines should be straight when lying on the side and when on your back the natural curves in spine should be well maintained. If not then perhaps that is not the right futon for you. Another thing to look out for is that some models have metal rods along the middle and that could potentially cause discomforts. It is better to get a futon that has flat wooden slats underneath.
